Ocean floor ‘reservoir’ of plastic pollution, study finds

NEW DELHI: A new research has estimated that about three to 11 million tonnes of plastic could be sitting on the ocean floor.

Scientists said that with a garbage truck’s worth of plastic entering the ocean every minute, the ocean floor has become a “resting place” or a “reservoir” for most of the plastic pollution. All this accumulated plastic then gets broken down into smaller pieces before getting mixed with ocean sediments.

Denise Hardesty, senior research scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia, said this is the first estimate of how much plastic waste ends up on the ocean floor
